Re: I smell something here Senn the change in stance of the Philippine government didn’t occur last week but last summer with the appointment of Gina L. Lopez an environmental activist as environmental secretary and her announcement that she was going to clean up the mining industry.“Environment Secretary Gina Lopez explains to media that she is not against mining but said that they (mining firms) should do it in a way “it does not cause suffering” and should have “reverence for the common good”.”She organised various teams to audit every mining operation in the country and it is the final result of this audit which was published last week. So the fact that MTL passed the audit should be seen as a de-risking of the operation .

I smell something here I do not feel very comfortable over the P governments stance on the recent closures, if you look at Oceanas gold mine it is next door or not to far away, and the reason for the closure from the woman in the government" Destruction of agricultural land"This looked so good before the Government change on miners last week.Beware is my advice.Senn

Re: Money Week Tip The article looked at which investments the panel would buy now. They came up with 13 investments in total, but only 7 were UK-listed:With the pound potentially bottoming out, they liked retailers:Sports Direct (SPD)Marks & Spencer (MKS)They like gold, and gold miners:Condor Gold (CMR)Metals Exploration (MTL)They liked palm oil:REA Holdings (RE)They tipped a company that makes a “flow battery” to store renewable energy:Redt Energy (RED)1And they tipped an oncology firm with a couple of clinical trials about to report:SalvRX (SALV)[link]

Centamin CEY.L As posted recently on ADVFN, the market cap of Centamin CEY.L is £1.94 billion, they produce Gold for the same overall costs per ounce as MTL are predicted to, they produce 5 x more gold per annum than MTL are predicted to, so if all was equal our market cap would be a fifth of Centamins at £388 million, as we stand it's £106 million, so we are over 3.5 times cheaper than we could be? If all in the world was equal we could be 3.5 x 5p at 17.5p per share, food for thoughtADVFN seem to have a lot more conversation than we do here, worth a look if you need to catch up on previous matters with this investment, great reading

Re: Phillipine Government The fact still remains that MTL have had to upgrade certain parts of the mining process during the closure period late last year, but all was passed and ramping up the mine continued, I can't see any more issues for MTL, they look to have green issues in hand, the Director buying in January only adds to optimism, news on production will come very soon and all will be much clearer, this is your chance to get in at ground level prices, as when confirmation that all is running as planned, you will be chasing the share price, early bird catches the worm

Re: Phillipine Government I am wondering if the mine closures might have been hastened by the appointment of the new mines minister in 2016. It's old news but Reuters reported in June that the incoming mining minister, Regina Lopez, is a "passionate environmentalist" and that she "slammed the use of open pits to extract minerals, describing it as "madness" even to consider the method". It sounds a bit like appointing Greenpeace to regulate fracking! I would not like to predict which way this will go for MTL but I do genuinely believe that the company's management remain optimistic. My impression is that there will be enormous gains or losses from this share over the next couple of years but I'm afraid I do not know which as the actions of politicians are difficult to predict.

Re: Phillipine Government This article goes into more detail, it lists the mining firms affected and some of the reasons why.[link] is not mentioned in the article. It’s worth saying that Ian Holzberger has always stressed that all mining practices, health and safety and environmental issues have been built and/or implemented to standards higher than would be required in Australia. They are rehabilitating the site as it is mined. They have already planted over 1 million trees on the site and the total planned to be plant it is 5 million. The cost for this rehabilitation is included in the cash cost of mining. They have had some recognition for this being shortlisted for environmental awards.MTL was shortlisted for the 2016 PMIEA“The PMIEA was established under Executive Order No. 399 on February 03, 1997 in compliance with the policy that mineral exploration and mining operation shall be pro-environment and pro-people. The said award is being conferred every year to mining companies which showed exemplary practices in safety and health; environmental protection and rehabilitation; and community and social development and management. This recognition is in line with the call for the Philippine Mining Industry to promote and practice responsible mining.”MTL was also shortlisted for the 2016 Mining Forest Programme.“The Mining Forest Program, established by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Administrative Order No. 22, Series of 1989, thru the National Executive Committee, and based on the set criteria and rating system, will select the Best Mining Forest.”

Re: Phillipine Government Am chilled, all i am saying it creates fear with a Government acting in such a manner closing mines ect, who knows what could be next will be the thoughts of investors.

johnybigarms1 02 Feb 2017

Watch MTL video Have a look at the website and view the video they released, its shows massive investment in the local area, health plans, planting new trees, education, roads, training, all benefit the Phillipines workers and community, some other mines deserve to be closed down as they just rape the environment and leave devastation to the land, you could say the Goverment are only doing what we would do if foreign company's did the same to the U.K

Re: Phillipine Government The suspensions are aimed at Nickel mines, MTL have had a review already, they passed and were awarded permission to carry on with ramping up, Oceana Glold haven't been suspended and the share price is up, so chill out guys, letting your shares go now just before news is silly, IMHO

Re: Phillipine Government Not sure who the other 6 mines are there going to add as well, not a good place to be lets face it with all that kicking off.Senn

Re: Phillipine Government Yes - story noted. Explains why MTL have been delayed by tough red tape over last year or so.But reneg on debt deal suggests that all those involved see a solution.Correct to be cautious but it does look a bit of a political move which as we all know, changes with each new government or person in charge.Surely the country needs the revenue?[link]
