PS - Cimatu It seems that 'militant farmers' who were looking forward to handouts from heavy levies the sacked DENR chief Lopez proposed on mining companies and also the RC church(opposed to Duterte and his policies from the start) have both condemned the choice of Cimatu. That makes his appointment very good news for investors in the mining companies!

ExpatBill 10 May 2017

More on new DENR chief(acting) The president's spokesman has defended the appointment of former Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief Roy Cimatu as the acting head of the DENR till confirmed by the Senate. The Palace said Cimatu is well-suited to balancing the interests of the mining industry and the protection of the environment. The green lobby and tree huggers plus of course the media - mostly politically correct and left wing here as in most countries in the so-called free world - are still upset at the sacking of the overly emotional and biased Lopez woman.Cimatu was previously a diplomat - useful experience in his new role - and has said he will be “moderate and calm” in implementing policies of the DENR and that mining companies would be allowed to operate as long as they do not destroy the environment and are properly managed.Fair enough.

New minister President Duterte has appointed a retired general to be acting head of the DENR so he will oversee mines in place of Gina Lopez the green loony. She's loved by the 'meeja' of course and has been interviewed a lot since her sacking, spitting blood and raving about how big business was behind her removal. The mining companies are happy with the choice which is a good sign but Greenpeace say he has 'no track record' and that they will withhold judgement though I doubt that will worry the mining companies! The general still has to be approved by a senate committee but I don't think there's much doubt he will be.

Re: STOP PRESS!!! Good question - we will have to wait and see but i think the president will not repeat the same mistake and pick a 'green fanatic' and loose cannon who slapped charges on the mining companies that were not allowed by law. A very silly overly emotional woman. Mining brings in a huge amount to the Philippine economy and they employ many people. The mining companies finally got their act together and Lopez now has 4 different law suits to face, including a charge of graft, so I think president Duterte will pick a more pragmatic and sensible person to replace her.

Re: STOP PRESS!!! OK, so out with the environmental extremist, Gina Lopez, but in with whom..?

ExpatBill 03 May 2017

Re: STOP PRESS!!! Lopez held a news conference after her sacking and she was absolutely LIVID. How dare the Senate sack her!!! She was shouting and literally shaking with rage and venom towards the members who had voted against her and there was me thinking that tree hugging eco friendly nuts er activists like her were gentle folks. lol GOOD RIDDANCE!

ExpatBill 03 May 2017

STOP PRESS!!! Gina Lopez has just been given the boot!!! A dark cloud over the mining industry in the Philippines has just been lifted.

ExpatBill 03 May 2017

New minister of mines I think the share price has taken a hit because of the new minister in charge of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources(DENR) Gina Lopez. I have been watching on TV here the hearings in the Philippine Senate regarding her and it is very obvious she is a very passionate and emotional tree hugger type of environmentalist and is against mining, though of course she denies that when accused of it. She sees a wonderful future in bio-diversity, eco-tourism etc etc and decries the destruction of the natural landscape by mining, especially open pit mining, without mentioning of course that the mining companies have to set aside the funds to clean up their sites once mining has been completed. A very biased woman and I hope very much that she gets the boot. The current feeling seems to be that there is a 50-50 chance of that happening. The mining companies I think were surprised by her onslaught initially but now seem to be getting their act together and have brought a graft case against her.
