FT Lex Financial Times' Lex column is backing cash to come good for banknote producer De La Rue.The company makes cash for clients such as the Bank of England yet experienced troubles in 2014 resulting in mixed results and a tumbling share price.De La Rue went through somewhat of an overhaul around that time, with Martin Sutherland taking over as chief executive, after selling his own cash processing business in May of that year.Around 6bn banknotes are typically printed per year by the company to distribute to banks, significantly less than before Sutherland took over two years ago, but more in line with current demand.Citigroup estimates that this consolidation will generate an extra £40m in savings over the next three years.Despite many predictions that cash itself is on the way out as banks and companies move towards more digitised methods for transactions, Lex believes that this will not be the case any time soon. Before the British referendum on its membership of the European Union, the European Central Bank reported that demand for cash was growing by at least 5% per year in most of Europe.De La Rue also prints passports, and reports suggest that sales could be boosted by as much as £200m.Shares in the company have risen by 40% this year already. The market signs are good, and may well show De La Rue investors coming away with more of the very product it produces, Lex concluded.

Re: The decent price rise today so far Joatmon, My holding, bought 6 months ago, is up 45% and like you, I cannot put my finger on a good, solid reason for this very welcome rise. But, heigh, ho, Mr Market, keep buying, or, at least, keep holding.Cher Eugene, who wishes Centrica would copy De La R

The decent price rise today so far So has anyone any idea why the decent price rise today so far ?Obviously there is a shortage of stock as little is traded each day, but what is the reason for the price rise?

Re: Plastic Actually I think I was wrong. I think this £5 is printed on polymer from Guardian which owns Innovia Films in Cumbria. I don't know if DLAR are involved in the actual printing process. For obvious reasons there is a lot of secrecy involved.[link]

Meanbugger 03 Jun 2016

Re: Plastic I don't think it has ever been publicly confirmed but I think they are. Of course they last 10 times as long as paper ones so DLAR will print fewer of them but I understand DLAR also manufactures the polymer so most of what it loses on supplying the banknote paper it will win back on the polymer. Overall though it is international sales and the margins they can achieve there that will make all the difference to DLAR's profits outlook.

Re: ve trading update I hope your projections are correct. This is my star share; had 1,000 and was showing a substantial loss at the end of 2015. Added 4,000 at the end of Jan and have a profit of some £1.20 per share to date. Keep on rising!

Re: Results Yes the results were relatively good as expected. The loss-making cash processing business has been disposed of and banknote printing capacity has been cut. I would expect operating margins on banknote printing to increase during the year as they run more often at full capacity. They are also looking at partnering with other companies in banknote paper which should also benefit margins in the longer term. Polymer notes also offer good opportunities.I think the story remains good and I think there is every chance profits could be better this year than currently indicated by the analysts.

Re: ve trading update Mean, The other thing about DLAR, now that it's business seems to have stabilised (famous last words) and costs have been taken out of the business, is the ROA is at around 8-9%.If they can maintain that and grow even only slowly, this will give a reasonable return.Games -- It needs to, I'm still under water by a good margin!!

Meanbugger 20 Apr 2016

Re: ve trading update games - we'll see. The business seems to be improving yet the shares are still not too far off their low point and now they want to restrict their financial disclosures. The chart is looking interesting as well.

gamesinvestor 20 Apr 2016

Re: ve trading update mean -- I can't imagine it matters a jot to the underlying business, and accounting practices are designed by a bunch of abacus rattlers to help disguise and present numbers in different formats to confuse investors and city pundits. What really matters is how much cash they produce at the end of each year, and I don't mean the stuff they are asked to print on someone else's part.Games --- 4.97% jump up in the share price is better than a 4.97% fall of course.

Meanbugger 20 Apr 2016

Re: ve trading update The shares have responded well to the accounting change as well. I don't claim to understand it but they imply they will be reducing the amount of financial information that they disclose which can only be a good thing when they are involved with government contracts.
