Re: Reynolds LK,"Is Woody losing his touch?"No point asking Games. I don't think he feels Woody ever had the touch

Re: Reynolds Games,"rejected"Strange .... this is what Woody's bag carrier had to say about the deal in an email which chust landed in my email inbox:"Our view is that this deal was inevitable and, although it has happened earlier than we thought, makes a lot of strategic and financial sense."Perhaps it will go ahead ... but at a higher price. Is Woody losing his touch? You're only as good as your last deal, as a former boss of mine used to say ... irritatingly frequently.LKH on the flybridge no position in BATS

Re: SUNDAY TIMES BUSINESS Tremendous stuff, Nige.

Re: SUNDAY TIMES BUSINESS Great posts and great fun. I love the tongue in cheek humor on these BBs... I sort of agree, but interestingly many people assumed that all North American Indians smoked tobacco say 3-400 years ago. The Indians in the Northern part of Canada did not smoke tobacco, in fact, most had never heard of it until perhaps 50-100 years ago. There is unrefuted proof of this. Their Inuit ancestors never smoked either. Think on this They could not grow tobacco on snow and Ice and some were using Iglus to desperately grow MARAUAHA! .The biggest problem was that the fire used to keep the temperature of the marihuana just right just melted the iglus and that's why you never saw an Eskimo get high. They were to busy building new iglus in a desperate attempt to succeed

Re: SUNDAY TIMES BUSINESS For years they've had Dry January, recently Stoctober, or some such nonsense. I don't think this hit the bottom line of any single booze company.A worldwide no smoking week, will be much the same. People will commit to give up smoking on the Monday, but by around 11.15am, they'll be lighting up due to the stress of it all.If my holding in BATs falls, it will be for other reasons not a facebook group attempting to stop people smoking.IMHO.

Re: SUNDAY TIMES BUSINESS Haha, Nige the snake! Good effort with the comeback - made me laugh out loud! A Villa fan I may be, but an expert on their playing ability I am not, so guilty as charged. I'd hazard a guess that ironically, there are more Stoke and blues fans who smoke than AVFC. Not an expert on smoking related issues either, though I am confident I have more expertise than those promoting stop smoking strategies on our health service! I say again, smoking is and always will be attractive, particularly to teenagers (the hardest to persuade to quit), and in poorer areas of society. Quitting is not impossible, but it requires a certain mindset. Creating and sustaining that mindset is not something the NHS is interested in. Throwing pills and chemicals at smokers does not make them quit! Conveniently, there is no official research done as to how many quitters take up the habit again, once they have finished their course of sometimes addictive medication. And so, IMO, the success rate figures are flawed. And with regard to vaping, many quitters claim to be quitters because they have switched to e-cigs! Again IMO, e-cigs are just as addictive as the leaf! I know many folk (unrelated to my therapy practices) who smoke and vape! Though an investor, I don't hold shares in BATS nor IMB and perhaps hypocritically, it's nothing to do with conscience. I've merely monitored the boards and share prices for a few years. World No Smoking Day, as you mentioned, is also not a deterrent. A smoker will only quit if he or she has the resolve to. I haven't yet done any research on manufacturers of quit smoking medication or nicotene replacement products on FTSE, but they must do well, indeed very well out of the UK health service. A few years back, every other tv advert was an NHS quit smoking ad. This went on for months and months, and must have run into millions or billions! Have you noticed the adverts are no longer on our screens? Never mind those who think Brexit will damage the NHS, I'd be more concerned at how much their fruitless and spurious quit smoking campaign cost the nation! All IMHO of course! Nige, the tobacco market/share prices have always been volatile. Yes, share prices have dropped significantly just recently, but I am confident they will bounce back as they always do!

Re: SUNDAY TIMES BUSINESS Please don't insult My intelligence villa fan Do Aston Villa have any Fans. Stoke City FC are a much better team and have consistently hammered all the Brummies for a long period of time over the years. Even Birmingham City have Lost to Port Vale on many occasions.

Re: SUNDAY TIMES BUSINESS Are you not aware of 'Worldwide No Smoking week'... Go to Facebook and place this in the search. There will be upwards od 20,000 members on this group by January the 1st 2017. As I have said possibly a 50% drop but you seem to be an expert Where do you think the sp is going.I did say I possibly over estimated the drop.

Re: SUNDAY TIMES BUSINESS Nige The Snake, I'm sure your intentions are well meant (or are they? Perhaps the clue is in your name!), but I never know whether to laugh or cry when I read your posts! Exactly what legislation is it that you constantly allude to? And how have you come by this? Laws regarding cigarettes and e-cigs came into effect this year. The link which you put up several posts ago regarding the impending doom of 'new legislation' was dated 2013! The only new ruling on the horizon is that menthol is to be removed from tobacco products by 2020. Just so you know, previous visible health warnings on packets, plain packaging, menthol removal, zonal smoking bans, and any other legislation will have little or no impact on sales of tobacco, nor indeed the share price. IMO it just makes smoking more attractive. Take it from an ex smoker who now makes a financially rewarding living in encouraging smokers to quit, and in other complementary lifestyle measures. And no, I don't hold shares in BATS. At the moment, the share price is falling because of factors I don't understand. This industry has always been attractive and successful, and always will be, unless of course tobacco plants develop an incurable disease that will decimate the crops - at such time I can kiss goodbye to a relatively comfortable lifestyle.

Re: SUNDAY TIMES BUSINESS "Legislation due first week in 2017 which will take the sp to an all time low."It's one thing expecting a big fall, but to use a term like "all time low," I guess, is exaggerating. For one thing, do you know what their all time low is? If not, why use a term like that and make yourself look less credible? it was formed in 1902. I'm not going to spend any time trying to find out when it listed - maybe straight away; but I can tell you the share price was around 270 in 1980; and it's certain it will have been lower in earlier years. So you're talking of losing 95% of its value just to match that price, far more I'm sure, within 8 weeks.

Re: Trump OK I suggested that BAT would reach an all time low but watch this space Im guessing at least 50% will be wiped off the sp towards year end No advice etc

Nige the snake 11 Nov 2016

Re: SUNDAY TIMES BUSINESS that maybe the case but the interesting thing this legislation will also affect all types of smoking outdoors even those who may think e-cigs are safer than tobacco Think about it. No one knows the long-term effects of ecigs. I personally can't stand the bl--dy things anywhere near me indoors or outdoor

Hardboy 10 Nov 2016

Re: Trump There certainly have been some strange price movements these last 2 days.If we look at the UK I don't really see any inflationary pressure apart from the weak sterling, and that should not be a reason to raise interest rates. So I still see value in the "bond proxies." However if the Trump regime is going to boost industry in the US then I guess many UK based cyclicals will benefit. But why UK house builders should be rising, while tobacco, phones & utilities are falling, I don't really understand.
