Re: Are your genes switched on? Yes I think it is. A whole new field of science has opened up. The human genome has been published but makes little sense. In an average cell most genes are switched off! What makes them turn on depends on various outside influences. With miRNAs you can see what genes are active. Hence miRNAs can throw insight into memory and Alzheimers disease... In the case of cancer help to detect the cause or any immune response... Researchers will have more questions than answers! I can see Abcam doing very well catering for scientists investigating myriads of complex disorders like rheumatoid arthritis. I am an eye surgeon so it does not help me directly but I can see the potential as a shareholder. Firefly is a tiny part of Abcam's business now but in a few years should be highly significant.

Are your genes switched on? Exciting news as Abcam pushes new frontiers - having just launched a range of multiplex miRNA profiling assays of miRNA biomarkers, based on Firefly™ particle technology. Researchers can rapidly and cost-effectively profile up to 68 miRNAs in each well of a 96-well plate from small volumes of crude bio-fluids like serum.Customers can chose between fixed panels targeting specific disease areas or customize their own panel. Universities will relish exploring how the environment can modulate the genome e.g. the links between obesity and cancer as genes switch on or off. Also many other avenues to prospect with direct relevance to the life sciences and human health.

Well done, Jeff! From the latest RNS:"3,060 share awards, in the form of Nil Cost Options under the Abcam plc Long-Term Incentive Plan (the "LTIP" made on 5 November 2014 to Jeff Iliffe, a Director of the Company, which arose as a result of an administrative miscalculation, have today been waived by the participant."LKH on the flybridge

Wow, breaching earlier 540 today The giddy rise of ABCAM my have to pause eventually but it isgood to see the price extend beyond its previous historic high. The long term outlook remains bright.

Re: Irritating Who would have thought inventing fancy stripes would make a multibillion dollar market. But bar codes transformed the retail industry. Now ABCAM with the latest Firefly acquisition have barcodes that work on a nanoscale, very clever and potentially transformative when searching through millions of similar immunoglobulins, microRNAs etc. ABCAM is currently very profitable and still has a long way to go in my opinion.

Re: Irritating Quite the opposite has occurred! Agree with your logic but the sp is flying. Any ideas why?

Irritating So, Milner's placing shares go at 465p. While one can only applaud his philanthropic gesture in donating some of the shares to charity it rankles that private investors will (perhaps only temporarily) be kicked in the teeth by the probable fall in the share price, while the institutions which were able to pick up these shares at 465p will benefit.LKH on the flybridge

Share price rising Rapid rise in share price since February and I don't know why other than this is a growing company with excellent prospects. ABC should soon overtake its historic high of 520. I remain overweight which helps balance out all my sour lemon shares!

Abcam builds for the future Anticipated results for the half year “Overall we expect total revenue growth for the period to be 13.8% on a constant currency basis and following the adverse rates of exchange seen during the period compared to H1 2013/14, growth on a reported basis to be 7.7%”WHAT IS NOT TO LIKE - the business of Abcam has grown to planAbcam says "in its core catalogue products business, it expects to report revenue growth of 16.7% in the first half of the year. Growth from primary antibodies continued to outpace market growth rates, partly driven by RabMAb product revenues which grew at 19.4%. Non-primary antibody product revenues grew at 29.3%. In both areas, the growth is within our full year 2014/15 guidance of 15-20% and 25-30% respectively".MORE IMPORTANTLY: ABCAM IS BUILDING FOR THE FUTURENot everyone wants Abcam to branch out but researchers need new and better tools as the frontiers of science expand. In my opinion Abcam has made a wise investment decision in buying Firefly BioWorks Inc on a cash-free/debt-free basis for £18.5m. In the scheme of things this is peanuts but that business is new and requires Abcam's marketing and development to flourish.Firefly BioWorks make minute fluorescent barcodes that stick to microRNAs (miRNAs) which shed light on DNA activity and messenger RNA. We already know the whole genome in humans and other animals but still only have a hazy understanding of how the genome really works - how it controls the creation of life (embryology) or what goes wrong to cause diseases like cancer.MicroRNAs are found in plants and animals and have a role in suppressing messenger-RNA. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding RNAs of approximately 18 to 22 nucleotides in length that regulate gene expression. They are shaped like old fashioned hairclips having a tight bend and folded back on themselves. Depending on their individual base sequence they stick to complementary bases on messenger-RNA. miRNAs are required for the normal development of organs and are disturbed in disease. Their existence has only been appreciated for 20 years. The fact they have great significance about 10 years and now the first clinical trials are actually underway e.g. synthetic miR-34a to hopefully cure liver cancer.A drop of human blood contains thousands of miRNAs. What Firefly BioWorks make is a kit that in a few hours can analyse I drop (0.04 ml) of that blood, serum or mashed up tissue against a panel of selected miRNAs. For instance in the case of a patient with disseminated tumour of unknown type. The pattern of miRNAs might shed light on which underlying tissue has become malignant, i.e. where the primary might be so the most effective treatment can be determined. The stability of miRNAs in blood makes them ideal biomarkers. The Firefly microArray assay can detect targets down to 1 attomole. That is 1 part in a quintillion or in other words 1 followed by 18 zeros (yes, I can’t imagine that nor the total world population is only 7 billion which is 9 zeros). The Firefly toolkits only require standard laboratory equipment. Researchers all over the world will be itching to get into this field. It is a whole new branch of science and Abcam will make the technology available to all biological scientists including those interested in human oncology.

Re: KM,I've looked into the Firefly acquisition and found this:"Abcam and Firefly also see further potential to combine Abcam's proprietary RabMAb® technology with Firefly's assay capability to provide multiplex protein measurement."Hmmm. Not sure that takes me any further forward in understanding what they've bought. Never mind.LKH in Davos for the craic

Re: Re: 'what you in Davos for LKH' - hopefully skiing and not some boring meeting, LOL'It looks to me as if everything is fine and this is just a temporary wobble, notwithstanding LG's bot reading!I wonder what LGs bot looks like. When she mentions her machine, an early 70's VAT calculator comes to mind.

Re: Re: What you in Davos for LKH?Even if the acquistion is of a small company, it signifies something important, that the new CEO is into acquisition, and the Board are up for it too. I don't know anything about Firefly. Anyone know?
