Stagecoach preliminary results for the year ended April 2019 Stagecoach Group – Preliminary results for the year ended April 2019 (pdf) North American business sold off to private equity. No more rail business from August 2019. UK bus business flat at best. Lots of debt. Share buy back under way. I won’t be rushing in.

One rule for Carillion one for Stagecoach SGC will be doing good from now on, because they left Virgin rail in good shape and learned the lesson. For any new contract, they should read all the small prints, hire a good barrister (legal team) before guaranteeing anything. SGC should also get involved in HS2 and get involved with the chosen big rail operators by the government, over 40 billion project?

SGC paid the price SGC already paid over £150m fine? to Government from total Stagecoach profit fund, I think people should be aware of this. They did not go off lightly!Shareholders lost out a lot in this difficult venture. It was a failure of all parties, but who paid the most?SGC is now Leaking the wound! In future SGC should read all the fine prints before issuing any guarantee and hire a good Barrister to start with!In my opinion SGC & Virgin Rail was honest & innocent, someone led them in a garden path.

One rule for Carillion one for Stagecoach Why has Stagecoach been allowed to get out of loss making contracts when Carillion's only way out of loss making contracts was going bust. Stagecoach shareholders should breathe a sigh of relief that they have been let off the hook. And don't even get me started on Richard Branson, moaned years ago about the West Coast mainline deal after FGP won it, allowing it to be re-tendered yet he is silent now?

East Coast Line When I saw the announcement today I expected carnage, but find the shares have inched higher. I guess it removes uncertainty.

on the move Could have a chart breakout here, deffo been a good week.Just hope its not all to do with the potential takeover of First Group..........

Q3 They start off by saying: "Our expectation of the Group's adjusted earnings per share for the year ending 28 April 2018 has not changed from when we announced our interim results in December 2017." So logic would suggest, if the outlook has not changed, that the value has not changed. The day they released their interims they closed at 179.85. Last night they closed at 130.75 - 28% lower. I am sure they are undervalued!

Re: paid 130 I have never understood why bus companies go all starry eyed at rail franchises. Thanks to the wonderfully unbiased media, they are never going to be good from a PR point of view (think of the annual drama regarding fare increases and 'leaves on the line' /'wrong kind of snow') and the margins are pitiful especially when viewed on a risk v reward basis (National Express and now SGC especially from a financial point but also GOG with the DOO dispute in terms of reputational damage). The only plus points of them is the cash flow that they generate and also, I would think, the access to rail replacement business BUT the bus companies would probably get the lions share of that anyway due to the fact that not many other businesses/individuals have large amounts of buses and coaches to hire out anyway. I am still a holder of SGC and GOG and believe that they are good businesses and undervalued but I do hope that they return to their core business as £200m is an awful lot of money that could have been spent on new buses!

Re: paid 130 Of course yesterday's analysis of the UK Rail sector only covers part of the business, but I have rad it in detail a couple of times, and have to conclude some of these franchise contracts are incredibly complicated with different parties being involved, and if you were going to franchise out UK rail, you would not start from here!As far as I could glean Stagecoach are doing OK service wise; and where they aren't Network rail are to blame. Finances are a bit different, but until Jezza comes along to nationalise the railways again, they should be able to make something out of those contracts they're involved in.
