Slice and dice markets through stock factor lens – what good companies stand out? If you slice and dice the UK equity market now into 3 simple stock factors: quality, value and momentum, how will the market look like in that perspective? What stocks will stand out, fundamentally, without getting distracted by all these headline Brexit noises. This is what matters to long term stock picking, rather than headlines dominated by political mess. Here is my first attempt. 5 stocks stand out overall of all the 3 factors. They are Plus500, Genel, TCS Group, EI Group and Paragon Banking. They appear to score the highest sum of quality of companies, stock valuations and the operating momentum of the businesses. If you care just about quality, be it returns, profitability or balance sheet strength, these 5 companies appear to be highest scorers: Amigo, Miton, CentralNic, Plus500 and Judges Scientific. What about value factor, defined by any of the P/E, P/B, FCF yield? 5 winners are: Genel, Eland Oil & Gas, Gulf Keystone, Plus500 and Ophir. Apparently, energy stocks dominate in the value hunting land. Finally, if one just cares about operating momentum, which is the positive surprise to consensus of sell side, what we have on top 5 are: Carr’s, Elektron, Diploma, Hikma and BTG. Quite a diverse set of sectors as you can see. Plenty of stocks from different sectors, all with unique drivers of their own. Does politics matter? Perhaps it does to politicians. Not necessarily though, to the real stock pickers. Thoughts?

Re: Article from Fool Not sure why he thinks it is "definitely worthy of attention from those with a fairly high tolerance for volatility and capital risk". Always thought it was relatively safe at the price it has been. It could be viewed that buying shares in any fund manager is risky, as there fortunes are doubly connected to the stockmarket - however 2 of Miton's funds are particularly defensive and are more likely to attract money if markets get jittery. IMHO. DYOR.

Peel Hunt ‘buyÂ’ recommendation with 42p target From citywire.co.uk Miton Group regains momentumFund group Miton (MGRM) struggled in the first half of the year but momentum is returning as rising equity markets stem outflows.Peel Hunt analyst Stuart Duncan retained his ‘buy’ recommendation and target price of 42p on the shares, which jumped 8.1% to 28.7p yesterday.‘The first half of 2016 was a difficult period for Miton given the outflows suffered from a key fund,’ he said.‘However, there is evidence that momentum is now returning to the business and we expect earnings growth in full-year 2017 despite the headwinds faced.’He noted the asset increase to £2.7 billion at the end of August - slightly higher than expected - ‘helped by rising equity markets and more modest outflows’.‘Although the first half of the year has highlighted the risks for smaller fund managers, Miton has an attractive range of products that have potential to deliver inflows and the balance sheet to support future growth initiative,’ said Duncan.Source: [link]
