Should Construction arm be hived off? [link] the numbers perhaps Morgan Sindall should offload its low margin construction arm?

Re: Reason for sharp SP rise? GPedro,I might add that I bought MGNS before results came out so from historic fundamentals it did not look as bad as it does now. The results came as a shock tot he market judging by SP fall so I was not alone in misjudging them.Incidentally another one my own filter picked out was ITV. Worth looking at IMO.

Re: Reason for sharp SP rise? Ah, I see.Glad you subsequently decided to put together your own filter and criteria for investing. At least you can feel comfortable in your own selections, and make intelligent decisions when deciding whether to sell or hold in the future.GP

Re: Reason for sharp SP rise? GPedro,I bought them as they were one of about ten companies that a ShareScope data mining filter written by a professional investor (Alpesh Patel) threw up in Jul 2014. In Apr 2014 the filter came up with top one of 8 that was GVC Holding. Up about 20% on what I bought at and has a yield of over 7%. This gave me some faith in filter however I have lost faith in Alpesh's filter, the criteria of which cannot be viewed. I have done my own filter which threw up 10 companies including HLMA and HWDN the two of which I have bought.

Re: Reason for sharp SP rise? Rhigos,I'm a little confused as to why you would buy MGNS at an almost 5yr high if you had concerns about the company's profit margins and dividend cover (which was also inaccurate in your initial post).GPedro

Re: Reason for sharp SP rise? Rhigos, to say that MGNS and KIE are in the same sector is a bit of an oversimplification. KIE are heavily biased towards services (eg Bin collection, local authity maintenance etc) whereas MGNS are more of a traditional construction company.Crazy as it may seem compared with a lot of other sectors a profit of 2% is actually reasonably good for the straight construction sector.I would be more concerned about KIE's ever increasing debt than by MGNS temporary blip in profits from legacy contracts that were tendered at the bottom of the market.KIE also have some legacy projects that were tendered at the bottom of the market so I wouldn't be surprised if they too have some skeletons in the closet!

Re: Reason for sharp SP rise? T1ps 2007,I was exaggerating a little. They did make a pre-tax profit of £13.9m in 2013, 59% down on 2012. The current Return On Equity (ROE) is 1.8% pa which is positive but only just. This is waht I was thinking of when I did my previous post. Compare this with Kier in same sector that has a ROE of 13.2%. In other sectors a ROE of more than 40% is not unusual. MGNS EPS growth is -83%.It could be argued that MGNS has been oversold which probably goes towards explaining extraordinary 15% rise in the last 2 days. Perhaps from now on they will recover. I feel that risk is too high and am happy to park cash in a different company that is growing strongly. Time will tell if I have made a wise choice. I was very disappointed with MGNS last results that showed that on several big projects they were making a loss. Then up to last Fri there was the resultant 25.5% fall in SP. Not good at all.

Re: Reason for sharp SP rise? Rhigos, how do you define "a profitable company". MGNS have made an industry average profit for at least the last 4 years so I'd be interested to know what you class as "profitable"I think your comment is misleading as MGNS are returning, and have consistently returned, a profit.

Re: Reason for sharp SP rise? Today Morgan Capital upgraded MGNS from hold to buy with a target of 720p.[link] would explain today's rise but not yesterday's,I sold this morning at 654p at a significant loss having bough in Jul at 841.75p. Now 660p to sell so could have got a bit more. Long term they may come good but currently they are not a profitable company and dividend only covered 0.5 times so expect a div cut. I should have sold as soon as terrible results came out.

Reason for sharp SP rise? Not that I am complaining, but does anyone know why SP rose nearly 5% yesterday and 4.7% today?
